Doctoral Admissions (Effective Spring 2004) Admission to graduate programs is competitive. Meeting minimum requirements does not guarantee admission, only that students will be reviewed for admission. Applications should contain all required Graduate School (http://graduate.ua.edu) and departmental documents (application for admission, vita, writing sample, and three reference letters) before they will be reviewed by departmental faculty. Students are advised that compiling documents and application materials can be a lengthy process. Please begin the process early to assume a timely review. Completed applications for the doctoral degrees in Educational Administration and Instructional Leadership are reviewed twice a year: April 1 and November 1. Applications are reviewed with consideration given to such factors as academic and professional backgrounds, test scores, professional goals and aspirations, and other factors that pertain to the ability to complete the program successfully and continue a productive career. In some instances, an on-campus interview may be required. The applicant is notified of the admission decision within three weeks of the application deadline. Accepted applicants are assigned a temporary advisor, whom they should contact to schedule a preliminary conference.

Conditional Admission A degree applicant whose credentials do not meet the above requirements for regular admission may be considered for conditional admission. Applicants for conditional admission will not be considered if their GPA is lower than 3.0 or their MAT or GRE score is less than 40 or 900 new/1400 old respectively.

The conditional status is lifted, and the status of regular admission automatically assumed, if the student makes a grade of "B" or better in each class during the first twelve hours of their graduate work. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the student being dropped from the program.

Graduate Assistantships and Scholarships? The Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies offers a number of graduate assistantships on a competitive basis. To apply, students must be accepted into the Graduate School.

There are also several graduate scholarships available to students through the College of Education. Students should contact the office of the Jill Lancaster, Scholarship Steward in 104 Carmichael Hall (205-348-6073).
